A DERELICT Hawthorn hotel has become “a scene from a horror movie” while Boroondara Council, the developer and residents fight over its future.
The former California Hotel at 138 Barkers Rd, dubbed “Motel Hell”, has fallen into a state of total disrepair and become a haven for squatters and vandals since closing in April last year.

A resident, who did not want to be named, made the horror-film comparison and described the site as “once a great spot to work some tail, but now not even the local bush pigs will come back here”.
Boroondara Mayor Jack Wegman said the council had no authority to clean up the site, which is owned by developer Thorney Properties, but had checked for health and fire hazards, of which there were none.
